Tips to prevent Theft at a Pop-Up Event
I bet you would never think theft would happen to a small handmade business…but it does!
I had this awful experience happen to me this weekend at The Broadstairs May Fair an event I love taking part in and one which I have attended for the last 4 years!
I had 4 items of handcrafted seaglass jewellery stolen. Total value £100
This experience has made me question my setup and explore better ways to protect my stock and hopefully reduce the risk of this happening again to myself or other small traders. The experience has left me feeling very angry, upset and disappointed.
You obviously want to assume the majority of your shoppers are stopping by because they’re interested in supporting you, and we never want to deter them from shopping. But as a small business, you also have to protect your profits.
Here are 10 tips to help prevent theft at your craft show booth:
1. Create Clear Sightlines & Remove Blind Spots
Ensure you can clearly see the majority of your products from any spot in your space. For example, avoid hiding behind tall displays and keep tall fixtures along the edges of your booth. This minimizes the chance of thieves concealing items behind displays.
2. Keep Small Items Close to You
Items that are small, easy to steal, or higher in price should be placed close to you or slightly out of reach. This makes it easier to monitor these items and deters quick thefts.
3. Put Items at Arm’s Length
Arrange items higher or near the back of display shelves. This setup makes it harder for thieves to casually pick up and pocket items without drawing attention.
4. Say Hello!
Greeting every person who approaches your booth serves dual purposes. It's good customer service and also discourages potential thieves. Attention makes it harder for shoplifters to operate unnoticed.
5. Add Mirrors
Mirrors are helpful for customers trying on items and act as extra sets of eyes. Position mirrors at the ends of tables to reflect the entire length, or hang them strategically around your booth to give you better visibility.
6. Tidy Your Craft Show Space
Keeping your area neat reduces the chaos that thieves thrive on. Regularly tidy up and take inventory between customers to quickly notice if something is missing.
7. Wear a Money Belt
Use a money belt or apron for holding cash instead of leaving a purse or cash box unattended. This keeps your money safe and allows you to be more mobile.
8. Secure High-Theft Items
Pin down or secure items that are particularly valuable or prone to theft. For extra protection, display high-theft items in a case or keep them behind the table, requiring customers to ask to see them.
9. Have “Testers”
If you have duplicate items or variations, put out a single tester and keep the rest behind the table. This allows customers to interact with the product without giving thieves easy access to multiple items.
10. Enlist Helpers
Bring a friend or hire help for busy events. Extra hands can watch for theft and assist customers, reducing the chances of theft. Building a rapport with neighboring vendors can also provide additional eyes to watch over your booth.
Theft can decrease your profits significantly, but these tips can hopefully help protect your products and ensure a successful, stress-free event.
